By Dr. Nathan Jones | Boston University and Dr. Geoff Phelps | ETS

Too often, research recommendations surrounding measurement in professional learning fail to meet organizations’ immediate and long-term needs. Just because measurement approaches are valid and reliable does not mean that they can be implemented realistically or that the constructs they capture align with the goals that leaders have for their organizations. Therefore, the focus of this session will be on providing guidelines for measurement that are a) research-based, b) relevant, and c) actionable. Recognizing that PL organizations commonly approach measurement with many different goals in mind, the two presenters will begin by offering an overarching measurement framework that will support organizations in identifying an assessment plan. They will provide a summary of recommendations rooted in research literature, highlighting promising tools and practices as well as practical tips for implementing high-quality assessments. Special consideration will be given to guidance for ensuring that measures are equitable, allowing organizations to understand how well they are meeting the needs of learners historically marginalized in classrooms.
