This page provides an overview of the findings related to PL supports for the implementation of the Skyline mathematics in the Chicago Public Schools.
The Skyline curriculum in Chicago Public Schools is the first culturally responsive mathematics curriculum implemented at scale. In this study, RPPL explored the implementation of this curriculum by answering the following research questions:
- What does Skyline mathematics look like in practice?
- How are teachers using the Skyline-related PL offered by CPS?
To answer these questions, RPPL conducted classroom observations and interviews with 19 teachers and 2 school leaders from 5 schools, as well as 3 CPS district leaders and 4 Teaching Lab instructional coaches.
The findings highlight several lessons for other efforts to implement and support culturally responsive instructional materials and raise several questions about how to balance the need for local input to make curricula truly responsive with the need for input from dedicated content experts.
