AI in Professional Learning: Navigating Opportunities and Challenges for Educators

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom is widely discussed, yet there has been far less attention to the ways that AI will change teachers’ learning experiences.

By Brendon Krall, Carolyn Fagan, Nathaniel Schwartz, and Arielle Boguslav

AI is no longer a futuristic concept; it’s happening right now and is already in the PL landscape. AI tools are being developed to monitor classroom interactions and provide immediate feedback, and PL organizations are leveraging AI to scale instructional coaching.

AI in Professional Learning: Navigating Opportunities and Challenges for Educators provides recommendations to guide AI implementation in PL. The insights are based on interviews conducted with PL professionals—AI researchers, developers, PL providers, district personnel—and an examination of current uses of AI in teacher PL and its potential for enriching teacher learning experiences. RPPL hosted a webinar where Research Project Manager Brendon Krall led an in-depth discussion highlighting the key findings in the report.

To build on these findings, RPPL later surveyed PL providers across its network for the 2025 publication AI in Professional Learning: A Network Survey of PL Providers, which reveals how teacher PL organizations are investing in AI, early applications, and persistent challenges. Dive in to learn more about AI’s increasing influence on teacher PL, what research is needed, and how AI can be leveraged to improve PL and student outcomes.
